Walking by Faith vs. Taking Risks: Understanding the Difference

Jan 2, 2024 | Articles

Risk is often seen as a necessary component in the pursuit of great things. However, as leaders and ministers of God, we have a greater force to rely on – faith in God. In this article, we will explore the distinction between walking by faith and taking risks and how both play a role in ministry and life.

Calculated Risk:Calculated risk involves considering numerous factors before making a decision. As Jesus described in Luke 14, counting the cost is essential to ensure success. It requires careful planning and evaluation of available resources. Here are some elements to consider when taking calculated risks:

  • Will the endeavor accomplish the desired goal?
  • Do we have the means and team to complete it?
  • Is there an agreed-upon action plan in place, seeking wisdom from experienced individuals?
  • How will we measure success, and what milestones must be achieved?
  • When can we expect the desired result?

Uncalculated Risk:Uncalculated risk, also known as blind faith, is when individuals believe in a desired outcome without evidence or planning. This kind of risk-taking often leads to failure because it neglects to count the cost. Instead, biblical faith offers the highest assurance of success. When God is the instigator, He has foreseen and made provisions for all obstacles.

Walking by Faith:Walking by faith means joining God in His plans and campaigns to expand His Kingdom. It is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). When God gives a command or word, it is accompanied by evidence, substance, assurance, and conviction. Walking by faith involves:

  • Trusting in God’s word and plan.
  • Seeking confirmation from others that the word is from God.
  • Being fully persuaded that the word is from God.
  • Taking the next step revealed by God.
  • Inviting others to join in God’s work.

While risk and faith involve an unseen future, they differ in their reliance on human effort versus God’s power. Calculated risk requires careful evaluation and planning while walking by faith, necessitating complete trust and obedience to God’s leading. We must remember that calculating faith is impossible, as God works in supernatural ways beyond our own resources. As we diligently seek God and walk by faith, He rewards us and accomplishes more than we could ever imagine.
